Vimshottari Dashas
The Chart Comes With a Clock
Vimshottari means “one hundred and twenty.” The full cycle assigns 120 years among the nine grahas in a fixed order. A person does not begin at Ketu by default: the Moon’s birth nakshatra tells which ruler is active, and the Moon’s progress through that mansion tells how much of the first period remains.
This is why a difference of a few degrees in the Moon can change the opening chapter of the life clock even when the Moon sign stays the same.
One Full Sequence
| Ruler | Years | Broad field |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 | release, severance, insight, simplification |
| Venus | 20 | relationship, value, comfort, art, resources |
| Sun | 6 | vitality, authority, visibility, father |
| Moon | 10 | mind, home, care, public response |
| Mars | 7 | action, competition, technical force, conflict |
| Rahu | 18 | amplification, ambition, unfamiliar territory |
| Jupiter | 16 | growth, teachers, belief, children, counsel |
| Saturn | 19 | duty, systems, labour, persistence, age |
| Mercury | 17 | learning, trade, analysis, speech, adaptability |
The Moon Sets the Opening Chapter
Each nakshatra spans 13°20'. If the Moon has completed half of its mansion, roughly half of that nakshatra ruler’s Mahadasha remains. The actual calculation uses the fraction of the mansion still untraveled multiplied by the full period length.
The app should calculate this from high-precision ephemeris data and show the result as a date range. Manual approximations belong only in educational examples.
The Large Chapter
A Mahadasha does not make every symbolism of its ruler happen. It activates the planet as it actually exists in the chart: houses ruled, house occupied, sign dignity, conjunctions, aspects, nakshatra, and divisional support.
A strong tenth lord in a tenth-house network may make profession loud during its period; the same planet in another chart may deliver partnership, education, debt, property, or travel instead. The natal promise is the gate.
The Chapter Within the Chapter
In a Saturn Mahadasha, a Venus Antardasha is not simply “Saturn plus Venus.” The app should inspect their natal relationship, houses ruled, mutual disposition, and the topic the user is asking about.
The smaller ruler can open a particular room inside the larger era: relationship inside a career-heavy Saturn period, education inside a Rahu period, or property inside a Jupiter period, depending on the chart.
Pratyantardasha and Beyond
Pratyantardasha and smaller sub-periods can narrow windows, especially in expert practice. Yet every additional layer increases sensitivity to birth time, ayanamsa, calculation convention, and interpretive noise.
For a consumer product, Mahadasha and Antardasha should drive the main narrative. Deeper levels belong in advanced timing views and should be used only when multiple indicators converge.
Timing Cannot Invent a Chart
If a period ruler has no meaningful connection to partnership houses, a relationship prediction requires additional evidence before becoming prominent. If career is strongly repeated through the ruler, D10, tenth house, and transit, a professional threshold is more plausible.
This gate is one of the biggest quality differences between serious timing and generic “your Venus period means love” fortune telling.
The Trigger on Top of the Clock
A major transit of Saturn, Jupiter, or the nodes to the Dasha ruler, Lagna, Moon, or relevant house can strengthen a timing window. A transit alone should not overrule the natal promise; a Dasha alone should not be forced into an exact event date.
The best predictive output comes from convergence: the same topic visible in natal structure, current period, relevant Varga, and a transit trigger.
Pressure Is Not a Verdict
The app should identify the specific house themes under pressure, the resources that support them, and the time horizon. A difficult Saturn period may produce mastery as readily as frustration; a Rahu period may produce innovation or overload; a Mars period can become disciplined effort or conflict depending on the chart.
Prediction becomes more useful when it gives the user a map of emphasis rather than a sentence of doom.
Venus Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha
Imagine Venus rules the second and ninth houses and sits strongly in the tenth, while Saturn rules the fifth and sixth and aspects the tenth. Venus Mahadasha can foreground resources, learning, fortune, and public work. When Saturn Antardasha opens, the same era may become more demanding: credentials, team responsibility, deadlines, health routines, or service obligations can intensify.
If D10 repeats Venus-Saturn links and Saturn transits the tenth lord, the career reading moves from plausible to strongly convergent.
How to Rank a Prediction
Ranking must start with the natal chart and move outward.
Past, Now, Next
The ideal app view shows the current Mahadasha as the broad band, current Antardasha nested inside it, the previous and next sub-periods, and a small number of high-confidence thematic windows.
Tapping a period should reveal why it matters: natal planet role, houses activated, Varga confirmation, and transits. This makes prediction explainable instead of magical.
Dates Are Precise; Meanings Are Probabilistic
Software should distinguish computational precision from interpretive confidence. The start of an Antardasha may be precisely calculated; whether it produces a job change, promotion, workload shift, or simply a stronger focus on responsibility remains contextual.
A world-class fortune-telling product can be specific without pretending uncertainty has disappeared.
A Calendar Inside the Portrait
The chart describes the full field of possibility. The Dasha chooses which planetary network gets priority in a given era. Antardasha narrows the chapter, and transits help time the weather inside it.
That hierarchy gives the app a disciplined predictive engine: capacity first, activation second, trigger third.
The rest of this is yours, not a type.
